Located in the North-Atlantic ocean close by the Arctic Circle, Iceland is very much a bridge between continents. It takes approximately five hours to fly from New York to Reykjavík, and three hours from London. Thanks to the Gulf Stream, Iceland enjoys a cool, temperate maritime climate, with refreshing summers and surprisingly mild temperatures in winter. Icelandic culture has been shaped by isolation and the extreme forces of nature.

Capital city: Reykjavík. The largest municipalities are Reykjavík  (122,000); Kópavogur  (34,000); Hafnarfjördur (28,000); Akureyri (18,000); Reykjanesbær (15.000).

Size: 103,000 sq. km (40,000 sq. miles), bigger than Hungary and Portugal and a little bit smaller than Cuba

Language: The official language of Iceland is Icelandic, a North Germanic language derived from Old Norse. It has changed relatively little throughout the centuries. English is widely spoken and understood

Icelandic is the official language of Iceland. It is an Indo-European language, belonging to the sub-group of North Germanic languages. It is closely related to Norwegian and Faroese, although there are slight traces of Celtic influence in ancient Icelandic literature

Seasons

Winters in Iceland are seriously not as cold as you would think. Because of the gulf stream affect, the coast stays relatively mild year round. Conversely, the summer never gets too warm either. So while we have all four seasons here in Iceland (and sometimes you get all four seasons in one day!), the temperatures are not very extreme.

Spring: April - May Daylight Hours 15 - 18 Hours

The snow is thawing and maybe flowers start blooming. I kinda like the half snow on the mountain look! You get a good middle ground of things that make the summer great without the crowds and high season prices. Puffins start arriving (April-August). Longer days, Decent weather, Less tourists.

Summers: June - August Daylight Hours 16 - 22 Hours

Summers in Iceland can be delightfully warm plus the added bonus of the magnificent Midnight Sun which gives 24 hours of daylight and the excitement of midnight golf.

Autumn: August - September Daylight Hours 09 - 13 Hours

Golden light and the changing color on the trees, Coziness that comes with the darkness, “Normal” daylight hours. Start to see Northern Lights, possibly the first snowfall!

Winters: October - March Daylight Hours 04 - 10 Hours

Catching up on indoor activities: knitting, puzzling, game nights with friends, Snowy walks through beautiful landscapes! Feels amazing to soak in the many hot springs, Ice cave and glacier tours. Christmas lights, Christmas markets, Christmas decorations, Christmas spirit. New Years Eve: Reykjavik is ranked in the top 5 places in the world to watch the fireworks show! Snow covered mountains, frozen waterfalls, the Icelandic horse against the white, landscape…it’s all stunning! Northern Lights! (that should be reason enough!)

Things to do:

Blue Lagoon: Spoil yourself in the famous Blue lagoon

Get comfortable in the Blue Lagoon, one of the wonders of the world, during your visit in Iceland. Included in the comfort package is entrance to the Blue Lagoon, silica mud mask, use of a towel and 1st drink of your choice.  The water temperature is generally between 37-40°C (98-104°F). The lagoon contains 9 million litres of water. The water is self-cleansing – it renews itself every 40 hours. Blue Lagoon is mostly ca. 0.8-1.2 metres deep. Its deepest point is 1.4 meters.
